Professor Murniati Mukhlisin or known as Madam Ani holds academic degrees in Islamic accounting from several prestigious institutions: she completed her undergraduate studies at International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), pursued postgraduate studies at University of Indonesia, earned her PhD from University of Glasgow in the United Kingdom, and obtained a second PhD from PTIQ University Jakarta. Her academic journey was supported by several distinguished scholarships. She is married to Dr. Luqyan Tamanni and together they have three children: Layyina Humaira Tamanni, Hayyan Hani Tamanni, and Rayyan Ayman Tamanni.
Before entering academia, Murniati gained professional experience in the banking, finance, and IT sectors, having worked with Unibank – Jakarta, Ernst & Young – Kuala Lumpur, and ANSI Berhad – Selangor, Malaysia. She began her academic career in 2002 as a lecturer in Islamic Accounting and Finance and is a certified Islamic accountant. After earning her PhD in 2014, she was appointed as Affiliate Staff at the University of Glasgow, and from 2015 to 2017, she joined the Essex Business School at the University of Essex in the UK.
She currently serves on the editorial advisory boards of several reputable journals, including Journal of Islamic Accounting and Business Research (UK), Journal of Muamalat and Islamic Finance Research (Malaysia), and Turkish Journal of Islamic Economics. Her research adopts a critical approach, focusing on financial reporting, Islamic accounting, Islamic banking and finance, and Islamic financial literacy. In 2023, she was appointed as the first professor in Islamic Accounting.
Murniati actively contributes to professional organizations. She is a board member of Islamic Accounting Compartment under the Institute of Indonesia Chartered Accountants (IAI), Indonesian Association of Islamic Economists (IAEI), Indonesian Economist Association (ISEI), and Head of Supervisory Board of Association of Islamic Fintech Indonesia (AFSI. She also serves as a consultant for Bank Indonesia (BI), Financial Services Authority (OJK), and National Committee for Islamic Economy and Finance (KNEKS).
Beyond her academic work, Murniati is a well-known public speaker and motivator. Alongside her husband, she co-authored the inspirational book Sakinah Finance, which focuses on Islamic personal and family finance. They have conducted seminars and training programs in over 22 countries. She is also an active columnist in both national and international media outlets.
